1980’s hip-hop logo featuring the group, Kool Kidz Block, or KKZ Block for short.
Project Goal
Create a logo that represents your created band from the chosen musical time period. In this case, I decided to go with a 1980’s hip-hop group named Kool Kidz Block. Kool Kidz Block is an expressive and playful-like group that raps about their unique experiences and hardships that come along with growing up in the Bronx of New York. Brotherhood and friendship is a meaningful motto due to the fact that the group consists of three childhood friends that grew up together.
My Experience
I started this process with a lot of brainstorming. I hadn’t decided on a name for the group yet, so I did various lists of words, phrases, and other things that reminded me of hip-hop and the culture surrounding the genre in general. After deciding on a name, I continued with a mind map that focused on the overall identity of my group and the words that I associated with each of the main points.
Based off my new group’s identity, I moved on to create 40 different sketches of potential logo ideas. During the process, I really enjoyed the look of the bold and bubble lettering since it allowed for the logo to have that playful and child-like, carefree feel.
The Outcome
The incorporation of the small building inside of the logo took a lot fiddling around with in order to decide which placement I liked best. I knew it would be an important element to keep with my logo, so I was determined to find a perfect and coherent placement for it. The use of multiple contrasting colors in each letter adds to that carefree mood I was aiming for when creating this logo. Overall, creating this logo and researching about the history of the genre was very enjoyable.
